It's Friday, and I'm headed up to L.A. to visit my family, which is why I'm all dolled up. It's my dad's 72nd birthday today, and I'm suppose to meet my parents along with my sister for dinner tonight. I still haven't bought a present, and I really don't know what I could possibly give my dad that he hasn't already had or that he couldn't buy himself. When you're old and wiser, material things matter less and sentimental things matter more. Of course, with my parents it has always been that way. These are the same people who had the same furniture for over 30 years even though they could afford to buy new furniture and who drive their cars until the cars just won't go anymore. There is so much in them I need to emulate, and it's ironic that we were at such odds for quite a long time. Thanks dad for being a wise owl and for not sparing the rod when I was younger. Even though I didn't turn out exactly how you wanted, I am wiser and hopefully a better me because of you.

I think you're right about the presents, and probably the most important thing is just being there. Sounds like you did grow up to be pretty wise ; )
